• American Government
• Economics
• Health
• English 11 (American Literature)
• English 12 (British Literature)
• American History
This assumes that students have already completed 4 years each of Science, Mathematics, and their native language; as well as World Geography and World History.
Students who have completed Health and/or Economics as part of their original high school diploma are exempted from those courses, but must still complete a total of 4.0 units in order to earn a diploma. Additional credit can be made up by completing an elective course of their choice.
COURSES DURATION
Each course is created with approximately 18 lessons during each semester. This allows the student an entire week to finish each assignment and should only take an average student 5-6 hours of time per week.
The time is spent doing textbook or online readings, completing interactive activities, responding to a discussion topic, and completing the assessment. Some students, who are disciplined and self-motivated, have been able to complete each lesson in just a couple of hours.
Once a lesson is completed, the student may move on to the next lesson and complete the course as fast as he would like. If he needs more time for special circumstances, it is also possible to receive an extension past the normal 18 weeks per semester.
AMERICAN HIGH SCHOOL SERVICES
We will provide qualified instructors/mentors for all courses, whose expertise is in their disciplinary field. Instructors are available for consultation through email, telephone, and in the virtual classroom.
Mentors are trained in adapting the online curriculum to all types of learners and situations.
If the student needs special one-on-one assistance, he can also make an appointment with his instructor to meet in the virtual classroom at a special time.
Independent study students will have access through email, telephone, and special appointments with an independent study teacher who is also an expert in their disciplinary area.
All instructors are available during normal business hours throughout the week, but may not be available on the weekends or on holidays.
STUDIES FORMALITIES
Each course (general education courses, core courses, specialized field-specific courses) requires several critical reading/writing assignments (with emphasis on both content analysis and communicative skills), three essay exams, and one or two major research projects, plus a comprehensive final examination, with an approved proctor in place. The final examinations are notably challenging, as they require thorough assimilation of ALL course materials.
• WEEKLY ASSIGNMENTS: Students will be evaluated based on their ability to answer questions to worksheets provided in the course. Each assignment will present questions regarding information learned throughout the unit lessons. Students will be graded based on the number of answers scored correctly.
• EXAMS: Exams and assessments for the High School courses are all given online, via the Internet in a computerized format.
Most questions (true/false, fill-in-the-blank, multiple choice, matching) are computer graded, although short answer and essay questions need to be reviewed by the instructor before a complete grade for the exam can be given.
• Prompt submission during the time frame in which project was due, according to the schedule of assignments.
• Synthesis and analysis are organized, neat, typed and concise.
• Student demonstrates comprehensive knowledge of material.
• Responses to all specific questions are thorough, pertinent and accurate.
• Responses manifest critical thinking and full understanding
N.B: All lesson plans, materials, homework assignments, and turning in of homework is done online through email or through the drop baskets within the course.
GRADING CRITERIA
Students will be evaluated on the accuracy, specificity, referential detail, thoroughness and quality of presentation of each response. The following will be used to evaluate student’s participation.
• The quality and regularity of student-initiated contributions (via email). A minimum of ten interventions are required – at least one per week.
• Student demonstrated knowledge of weekly reading assignments: including required submission of chapter syntheses and preparation of end-of-chapter exercises.
• The quality and frequency of constructive comments in discussion.
• The degree to which the student shares relevant workplace and/or personal experience and knowledge – a sign of collaborative learning and a means by which to evaluate and apply concepts learned to real-life situations
Class participation (interactive communication) is an extremely important part of the learning process – and will account for 10% of the course grade. You will communicate with your Instructor regarding key issues from course readings and self checks. Contributions should be thoughtful. Emailing questions about specific concepts or assignments, though encouraged, will not count as participation.
Final grades for assessments and exams are completed and posted within 48 hours in the student's online grade book, so that students may move on to the next lesson.
